Promoting Accessibility in Bend
Bend’s public transportation system is more accessible due to DRO’s advocacy.
In 2006, Litigation Director Kathy Wilde filed a lawsuit in federal district court on behalf of several Bend residents with mobility disabilities who were being denied access to the Bend Area Transit (BAT).
While several plaintiffs were named, this legal action kept in mind all people with disabilities who are denied access to the fixed route transit system. Lack of access to public transportation limits the opportunity of people with disabilities to participate fully in programs, services and activities of civic and daily life and imposes unnecessary and unlawful barriers to independent living.
