Communication Access Information Center

  • The primary purpose of the Communication Access Information Center is to provide information of use to people employing or in need of Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART), also known as realtime captioning.  CART is specifically recognized by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as an assistive technology (AT) which affords "effective communication access."

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Consumer Advisory: Closed Captioning

  • The digital television (DTV) transition is the switch from analog to digital broadcast television.  The DTV transition will be completed on June 12, 2009.  The FCC wishes to reassure consumers that its rules do require digital-to-analog converter boxes to pass through closed captions. This advisory explains how consumers will be able to access closed captions using these converter boxes.

Sweet Honey In The Rock

  • Shirley Childress Saxton accepted the challenge of interpreting Sweet Honey In The Rock’s message and music in 1980, after having interpreted professionally for seven years.  Sweet Honey In The Rock had, in that year, made a commitment to making concerts accessible to the Deaf and to developing a Deaf audience.  From the beginning, the group included the Sign Language Interpreter in her costuming and in the semi-circle in which she sits or stands to perform.  This inclusion has been a clear statement to the Deaf audience that they’re included in the conversation.
