Developing a Culturally Specific Emergency Communications Plan for the Disability Community
A report produced by the Women with Disabilities Health Equity Coalition (WowDHEC). The overall goal of this project was to conduct a preliminary, culturally relevant assessment of emergency preparedness in the disability community. Because this project was envisioned as a pilot study, the focus was on gathering information from a broad cross-disability sample, rather than a specific disability sub-community (such as the Deaf or Autistic community) to inform future efforts to improve emergency preparedness among people with disabilities (PWD).

An Evaluation of the Impact of the NDRN Participation in the Katrina Aid Today Project
Hurricane Katrina was the largest disaster in U.S. history. The effects from this hurricane resulted in loss or destruction of housing for over 1.5 million individuals. It is estimated that 23 percent of those affected by this disaster were individuals with disabilities (National Organization on Disability, 2006). The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) and the Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters (VOAD) were awarded an unprecedented $66 million dollars in October 2005 through the Department of Homeland Security to provide case management for evacuees affected by Hurricane Katrina. This initiative led to the formation of the National Case Management Consortium (NCMC) and the Katrina Aid Today (KAT) project.
Disability Law Handbook
The Disability Law Handbook from Southwest DBTAC is a 50-page guide to the basics of the Americans with Disabilities Act and other disability related laws. Written in an FAQ format, The Disability Law Handbook answers questions about the Americans with Disabilities Act, the ADA Amendments Act, the Rehabilitation Act, Social Security, the Air Carrier Access Act, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, the Civil Rights of Institutionalized Persons Act, and the Fair Housing Act Amendments. Working Together to Help Youth Thrive in Schools and Communities
Systems of care--coordinated networks of community-based mental health services and supports for children and youth with serious mental health challenges--are able to dramatically improve the academic, behavioral and emotional performance of participating youth according to a new report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The report measures performance outcomes of system of care programs and found that these improvements occurred among many young people within 12 months of their enrollment in these programs.
